Youki Hirakawa (b.1983, Nagoya, Japan)

By analyzing the structures and information embedded in various daily and historical found objects, I create situations to explore how these elements function as transmitters within the framework of art. I approach my role not as a primary creator, but as a mediator, with some works assembled from selected ready-made objects and others constructed solely through instructions. Moving between Eastern and Western contexts, I aim to capture the strong connection between the geopolitical situation of the Far East, its climate, and the artwork—a dynamic in which, in the humid subtropical climate of the Far East, contemporary art, typically “dry” and detached in the West, absorbs a sense of humidity, almost condensing on the surface. From a geopolitical standpoint, having been greatly influenced by the Cold War, it is still in the process of exploring an identity shaped within the vast distortions it created.
