Silk Handkerchiefs, Toilet Door Plates
The attempt by the artist, who discovered modern poetic possibilities or a four-line connection in the character array found on four toilet door plates - “LADIES,” “PUSH,” “GENTS,” “PULL” - stumbled upon a reflection of Japan’s modernization and the artist’s family roots (sericulture) by inserting a silk pocket square that has now become an ornament for Western attire. The incorporation of verbs “PULL” and “PUSH” into the character strings “LADIES” and “GENTS” gives rise to a textile-like structure of language, evoking various meanings for the viewer. This work delicately captures the uncertain position of the artwork as envisioned by the artist.
